We are excited to bring back our Board Member Spotlight this fall. This month, we are highlighting Pura Strong, who describes herself as a devoted woman of faith, driven by an eager desire to ignite positive change in the lives of others. As a fierce leader, she dedicates her time to advocating for youth and families directly impacted by the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, both of which she experienced as a young person.
Along with being a relatively new addition to MCYJ’s board of directors, Pura is the current chair of the Michigan Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, the Outreach Coordinator for the Michigan Youth Advisory Board, a member of the Vista Maria Board of Advisors, and a member of the TLE-Quality Improvement Center on Engaging Youth (QIC-EY).
What first made you interested in joining MCYJ’s board?
My interest stems from a profound commitment to advocate for youth and families impacted by the juvenile justice system. Having personally navigated the complexities and challenges of this system, I have witnessed firsthand its flaws and the consequences it inflicts on young people and their families. This experience ignited a deep passion within me to create meaningful change. Growing up, I faced numerous obstacles leading to my system-involvement. These experiences opened my eyes to the systemic issues that often entrap youth—issues like poverty, lack of access to education, and the absence of supportive resources. The stigma associated with being involved in the system affected not only me but also my family and community.
I realized that the voices of those directly impacted were often silenced, which fueled my determination to advocate for change. Joining MCYJ is a natural extension of my journey. The organization’s commitment to reforming the juvenile justice system and prioritizing the needs of youth and families resonates deeply with me.
What do you like most about being an MCYJ board member?
What I like most is the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of dedicated individuals who share a common vision for justice and equity. Being part of a team that is passionate and deeply knowledgeable about the juvenile justice system inspires me every day. Each member brings unique insights and experiences, creating a room full of perspectives that enhance our collective efforts to advocate for change. I also appreciate the direct impact we have on the lives of youth and families. Whether it's through developing innovative programs, shaping policy recommendations, or engaging with the community, I find immense fulfillment in knowing that the work of MCYJ is making a tangible difference.
What would you like fellow juvenile justice reform advocates to know about you?
I am deeply serious about our work to change young people's lives and their families. God has crafted me into a warrior in this line of work—fierce and equipped to tackle the challenges of juvenile justice reform head-on. I place immense value on the community and believe providing the best possible services to the youth and families I work with is crucial. I make it a priority to be available and engaged, actively sharing space where change is happening. My commitment to this cause drives me to be present and participate in meaningful dialogues and initiatives that foster real transformation. Together, we can create a brighter future for the young people we serve.
What are your broad goals for 2024 surrounding juvenile justice reform?
My broad goals for 2024 surrounding juvenile justice reform center on elevating youth voices and incorporating their perspectives into the decision-making process. Those directly impacted by the system hold invaluable insights that can drive meaningful change. By actively engaging them in discussions about their experiences, we can develop policies and programs that truly resonate with their needs. Highlighting a lived experience approach means listening to youth and ensuring they have a seat at the table. I aim to create platforms where young people can share their stories and contribute to shaping solutions.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending my days at church, honoring God through worship, praise, and prayer. Connecting with my community is a fulfilling experience, especially when I volunteer in the children's ministry or teach Sunday school. I cherish creating memories with my friends and family, whether sharing a laugh or supporting each other through life's ups and downs. Recently, I became a proud dog mom to a new puppy, and it has been such a joy! She brings so much love and energy into my life. I'm also passionate about thrills and adrenaline rushes, so I’m always looking for exciting activities to try. Whether jumping out of a plane, trying an adventure sport like bungee jumping, or exploring new experiences, I love embracing those moments that make life exhilarating. Balancing my faith, family, my puppy, and thrilling adventures keeps my heart full and my spirit alive!
