Youth Justice Advocacy Profile: Michael D. Davis-Thomas

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your connection to the justice system?

My name is Michael D. Davis-Thomas, but most people know me as MDDT. My journey through the juvenile justice and child welfare systems has not only shaped my advocacy but also fueled my dedication to reforming these systems to serve vulnerable youth better. From an early age, I was more than just a bystander in the justice system; I was directly impacted by it. Having spent over eleven years navigating through the juvenile justice system and foster care system, I experienced first-hand the shortcomings and challenges within these systems. These early experiences laid a foundation for my commitment to ensure no child endures what I did without support or hope.

What motivated you to become a Youth Justice Advocate?

The catalyst for my advocacy is deeply personal. My childhood and adolescence were marred by abuse, neglect, and the constant instability of moving through various foster homes and detention centers. Witnessing and experiencing the justice system's failings motivated me to advocate for systemic changes to protect and uplift the youth still navigating these turbulent waters. My commitment is to voice these young individuals' silent struggles and strive for a system that upholds justice, compassion, and support.

What inspired you to create your podcast, Resilient Voices & Beyond?

The inception of “Resilient Voices & Beyond” came from a profound desire to amplify the stories often overshadowed by statistics. The podcast is more than a platform; it’s a community where voices from the foster care and juvenile justice systems can share their journeys, challenges, and successes. Each episode is crafted to inspire action, provide comfort, and remind listeners of the resilience that adversity can forge.

What advice would you give to youth interested in justice reform?

My advice for young people eager to contribute to justice reform is rooted in the power of informed advocacy. Educate yourself about the intricacies of the systems you wish to reform. Connect with local advocacy groups, attend community meetings, and consider the impact of writing to your local representatives. Real change starts with understanding the system and then rallying to address its flaws and inefficiencies. Be bold in your endeavors, and remember that every significant movement began with an individual who refused to be silent.

How can folks support your work?

Supporting my work can take various forms, from engaging with and spreading the word about the “Resilient Voices & Beyond” podcast to directly participating in advocacy efforts or donating to our Podcast and up-and-coming foundation. Each contribution helps us continue our mission to transform the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. Your support not only aids in continuing these efforts but also in expanding the reach and impact of our advocacy.

Conclusion

My journey from a youth within the system to an advocate fighting for its reform is not just a professional path but a personal mission. This work is not simply about changing policies but about transforming lives. I invite you to join me on this journey, to listen to the stories that need to be heard, and to help us create a system that genuinely supports and empowers its youth. Together, we can make a difference—one voice, one story, one step at a time.

Michael's work highlights how one can turn a negative experience into a journey of inspiring advocacy in young people around the state, empowering them to find their voice in their communities. By sharing his story and experiences, we honor his achievements and encourage others to advocate for positive change in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. We encourage you to listen to Resilient Voices and Beyond wherever you find your podcasts.
